JAP Release: 29 June, ENG Release: 3 AUG

So the week that just passed was the first week of reveals that we got to see, with each of the 3 clans some new cards that show us what we can expect from the rest of the set when it drops in late June. Here are some of my Initial Thoughts on the cards and their playstyles and how they've changed from the OG series.

Before each of the cards are revealed, Its important to keep in mind that the last 5-8 commons of clans in the set are always 5 types of triggers, 1-2 types of on-ride draw one starters and a grade 0 with some sort of unique clans skill (e.g. Giro, Dessert Eagle, Cat Butler etc.). Further more the cards divided by rarity will follow the order of Spike Brothers, Tachikaze and finally Megacolony, so this might make quite a big difference in predicting what cards are left.

Spike Brothers

V-EB01/006 RRR Juggernaut Maximum (ジャガーノート・マキシマム) Dark Zone/Giant/Spike Brothers Normal/3/Twin Drive!!/13000/0 Shield/1 | FORCE AUTO [V/R]: When placed, this unit gets [Power] +10000 until end of turn. AUTO [R]: At the beginning of your main phase, COST[Put this unit into your soul], search your deck for up to one "Juggernaut Maximum", call it to [R], and shuffle your deck.

V-EB01/025 R Highspeed, Brakki (ハイスピード・ブラッキー) Dark Zone/Warbeast/Spike Brothers Normal/2/Intercept/10000/5000/1 AUTO [R]: When placed, this unit gets [Power] +10000 until end of turn. AUTO [R]: At the beginning of your main phase, COST[Put this unit into your soul], search your deck for up to one "Highspeed, Brakki", call it to [R], and shuffle your deck.

V-EB01/027 R Wonder Boy (ワンダー・ボーイ) Dark Zone/Goblin/Spike Brothers Normal/1/Boost/8000/10000/1 AUTO [R]: When placed, COST[Put a card other than grade 1 from your drop zone to the bottom of your deck], and this unit gets [Power] +5000 until end of turn. AUTO [R]: At the beginning of your main phase, COST[Put this unit into your soul], search your deck for up to one "Wonder Boy", call it to [R], and shuffle your deck.

V-EB01/045 C Front Line Command, Sigiswald (前線司令 ジギスヴァルト) Dark Zone/Demon/Spike Brothers Normal/3/Twin Drive!!/13000/0 Shield/1 AUTO [R]: At the beginning of your main phase, COST [Put this unit into your soul, put a card from your drop zone on the bottom of your deck], draw a card, and [C-Charge (1)].

V-EB01/049 R Funky Bazooka (ファンキー・バズーカ) Dark Zone/Demon/Spike Brothers Normal/1/Boost/7000/10000/1 AUTO [R]: When your other rear-guard is placed on [R] in the same column as this unit, this unit gets [Power] +5000 until end of turn.

Gone are spikes' old playstyle of sending cards back to the deck with a soulblast and then superior calling them for a barrage of attacks. Instead their new theme is one that, at the cost of sending the corresponding unit to soul during the main phase, filters through the deck and pulls out a copy of that units and usually gains some power on place as well. Then sonme skills allow you to send some units from the drop zone to the deck once again. The subbing in and out of units certainly resembles American football, the sport its based on, with the soul and drop zone acting as a waiting point of sorts.

The skills seem to make it so hitting triggers will be more likely and each column will be hitting for strong numbers throughout the game, even going as high as 33000 in the early game turns or 43000 late game with more Force markers down on the field. Interstingly, as 4 copies of Juggernaut Maximum will be run in most decks there will most likely only be one option to ride as vanguard as most times you will want to have Juggernaut in the rearguard and you cant afford running too many grade 3s. It's also important to note that we still haven't seen any efficient way for the units in soul to move to the drop zone then to the deck to keep the strong powerful attacks rolling. It still remains to be seen what kind of skill the Boss Unit VR, General Seigfried will have, and that will be the key determinant of whether the clan will be getting the same superior call kind of multi attacks or simply bigger columns to hit the opponent hard.

Tachikaze

V-EB01/034 C Heavy Cannon Dragon, Sharangastego (重砲竜 シャランガステゴ) Dragon EmpiDinodragon/Tachikaze Normal/3/Twin Drive!!/12000/-/1 ACT [V/R]: COST[C-Blast (1), retire one of your other rear-guards], all of your "Heavy Cannon Dragon, Sharangastego" and "Sharp Blade Dragon, Revilstego" on [V] or [R] get [Power] +10000 until end of turn.

V-EB01/036 C Sharp Blade Dragon, Revilstego (鋭刃竜 レヴィルステゴ) Dragon Empire/Dinodragon/Tachikaze Normal/2/Intercept/8000/5000/1

ACT [V/R]: COST[C-Blast (1), retire one of your other rear-guards], all of your "Heavy Cannon Dragon, Sharangastego" and "Sharp Blade Dragon, Revilstego" on [V] or [R] get [Power] +10000 until end of turn.

V-EB01/037 C Assistpteryx (アシストプテリクス) Dragon Empire/Dinodragon/Tachikaze Normal/1/Boost/9000/-/1

It would seem that Tachikaze plays very similarly to its old style with retiring units and sacrificing allies for power and multiple atacks being the old playstyle. The other key component was being ablke to counterblast 1 to save the unit from dying and send it back to hand. Maybe the new Gigarex will bring in new ways to revive the fallen soldiers. Or perhaps it will just power up for larger numbers. The generic grade 1 9000 base vanilla is also here to take up one of the spaces, but fingers crossed for some units with cool effects to be revealed soon. Hopefully fan favourite units like Deathrex and Cannongear will return and allow us to relive ssome of the that old school Vanguard nostalgia. While not one of the most popular of the 26 clans, I played a bit of Tachikaze back in the day and I'm Interested to see what kind of budget decks I'll be able to craft up. Megacolony

V-EB01/009 RRR Machining Mantis (マシニング・マンティス) Zoo/Insect/Megacolony Normal/2/Intercept/9000/5000/1 AUTO [V/R]: When placed, COST[C-Blast (1)], look at six cards from the top of your deck, put up to one grade 3 card from among them into your hand by revealing it, shuffle your deck, and this unit gets [Power] +6000 until end of turn.

V-EB01/030 R Bloody Hercules (ブラッディ・ヘラクレス) Zoo/Insect/Megacolony Normal/2/Intercept/9000/5000/1 AUTO [R]: When placed, COST[S-Blast (1)], and this unit gets [Power] +6000 until end of turn. AUTO [V/R]: When its attack hits, [C-Charge (1)], and one of your units gets [Power] +6000 until end of turn.

V-EB01/032 R Phantom Black (ファントム・ブラック) Zoo/Insect/Megacolony Normal/1/Boost/8000/10000/1 AUTO [R]: When it boosts, COST[Discard a card from your hand], until end of that battle, this unit gets [Power] +6000, and your opponent cannot call normal units from hand to [G].

V-EB01/059 Karma Queen (カルマ・クイーン) Zoo/Insect/Megacolony Normal/1/Boost/7000/15000/1

It seems Megacolony is going to follow more closely to its G era play style, with counter charging, guard restrict and a bunch of other utility abilities mixed in. While not the strongest in terms of power or having multiple attacks, the tech style of Megacolony is the main draw of the clan. If all things go well, we might see some card stunning effects - that is, effects which prevent the opponents units from standing the next turn. While that might not be as good against Spike Brothers, against Tachikaze it will prove quite effective, solidifying that clan identity supersedes Imaginary Gift categorization so different clans within Protect will play quite differntly and have their own good and bad matchups, same as Force or Accel. Megacolony is one of my favourite clans, so you can expect to see as many types of decks showcases that can be made from this clan as possible, as well as some unboxings with this particular clan in mind.

To end it all off, it's hard to say what we will see going forward but new card reveals are here everyday, so subscribe for more analysis and posts (hopefully) everyday! The Destructive Roar drops on 29 June 2018, bringing Spike Brothers, Tachikaze and Megacolony into the fold. Personally I'm really looking forward to Megacolony because I really like the athsthetic. Let me know which of the 3 clans is your favourite and which clan release (not limited to these 3) you're most looking forward to and why!
